An incident in Classroom

There was an incident related to his childhood. Narendra was a great orator since childhood. Once, when he was sharing something with his friends in the school. All the students were busy listening to Narendra. Nobody noticed that the teacher has been come into the class and started teaching.

After some time, the teacher noticed that he was not getting attention from that particular group. He called them and started asking questions one by one to everyone. No one was able to give the correct answer but when the teacher asked questions with Narendra, he answered every question right. The teacher asked the students about “who was talking?”. Everybody pointed towards Narendra. But the teacher didn’t believe them because Narendra has given every answer correct. The teacher ordered every student to stand up as punishment and asked Narendra to sit down. Narendra didn’t sit.

The teacher asked him “why he is not sitting?”, he can sit because he has given every answer right?

He replied “Teacher! It was me who was talking and because of me, they weren’t able to focus in the class. So, punishment should be given to me.”

It was the greatness of Swami Vivekananda. He was never ashamed to accept his mistake. And another thing which we can learn from him is that to stay in the present at the moment although he was discussing something different his mind was conscious of what is going around him.

Swami Ji with his mother

Swami Ji with his mother

When he was ready to go to Chicago for giving a speech on peace from the world religion forum, his mother wanted to know whether her son was capable enough to give a speech to the world or not.

When Swami Ji and her mother were eating fruits in the house, she asked him to give her a knife. Swami Ji gave the knife to his mother.

Swami Ji’s mother said to him, “Son, you passed my exam?”

“When did you test me, Mother?” Swami Ji asked with a little surprise.

His mother replied “When I asked you the Knife you gave me by holding the sharp side and handed over me the wooden side. This shows that you are capable to give a speech of peace to the world because you will get harmed but never harm others by your deed.

This simple act was enough for Swami Ji’s mother to know the wisdom of Swami Vivekanand. Swami Ji often said that his mother played a significant role in all the wisdom that he possessed and in the upbringing of Swami Ji.
