Mr. Kalam was a very intelligent student since childhood. He was always keen to learn new things and this makes him mesmerized by books. Consequently, he developed a strong bonding with books and reading becomes his habit. Unfortunately, books are among those things which have paucity, books were not available in his village. He used to go to the home of Mr. STR Manickam, a revolutionary and militant nationalist, to borrow books to read. Mr. Manickam was a very polite person and he has always encouraged Abdul to read more and more books.

It was very tough for Kalam to study in a good school. He was a very hardworking student and dedicated to his studies. His father was a reputed person in his village but have lacked resources to educate his children. He wanted Kalam to study in a good school and Kalam knew that to do good in life he needs to move to a good school. In pursuance of good studies, He moved to Ramanathapuram to study at Schwartz High School.

There is a very famous story about him. Once, when he was looking for his class in Schwartz High School. His mathematical teacher, Ramakrishna Iyer, was teaching in one of the classes and Abdul mistakenly came outside his class. He caught him by his neck and caned him in front of the whole class. He got disappointed with this incident and decided to score the highest marks in mathematics.

After a few days, when he succeeded to score the highest marks in mathematics, the same teacher praised him in front of the assembly and said “Whomsoever I can become a great man! Take my word, this boy is going to bring glory to his school and his teacher”. This was made up for the earlier humiliation.

Many people played a significant role in Kalam’s life. One of them was Mr. Iyadurai Solomon. He was his teacher at Schwartz High School. He always says that “a good student can learn more from a bad teacher than a poor student from a skilled teacher”.

Madras Institute of Technology

After completing high school Abdul was confident enough to study further. So he enrolled for B.Sc (physics). Later, he realized that physics is not his subject. Afterward, he showed his interest in engineering. Consequently, he applied for MIT (Madras Institute of Technology).

To join MIT was not an easy decision for him. His father wants him to study further, but could not afford the fees of MIT. It was a very tough time for him and he didn’t even know how things would work. His sister, Zohra, showed faith in him more than anything else, she decided to mortgage her gold bangles and chains for Abdul’s studies. Abdul was deeply touched by her act. He vowed to release her bangles from his very first earnings.

Kalam has a habit to see things for hours and very deeply which fascinates him. When he entered MIT he saw an aircraft for demonstration. It was like that aircraft was there just for him. At that point in time, he never had thought of becoming a rocket scientist.

But destiny has already decided something great for him. Later, he became the Missile Man of India. He helped India in achieving many milestones including the establishment of India’s first-ever satellite launch vehicle called PSLV (polar satellite launch vehicle).

His life is an inspiration to all the young children who aspire to become APJ Abdul Kalam and contribute to the growth of our country.
